Pioneers Tally First Win of Young Season - Denver defeats Oregon in home opener

DENVER – Freshman Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas) tallied seven and six points, respectively as the University of Denver women’s defeated the Oregon Ducks, 17-12 today in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at Kent Denver High School. The Pioneers improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. Oregon falls to 0-2, 0-1.

Carver had six goals and an assist, while Jack scored five times. Junior Jessie Freer (Springfield, Va.) also had a big day with a goal and four assists. Junior Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recorded two goals and two assists. Junior midfielder Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.) registered two goals and an assist.

Greenlees tallied the game’s first goal, but the Pioneers still found themselves down 6-2 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Theresa Waldron and Jana Bradley each registered two goals in the game’s first 20 minutes to put the Ducks in front.

Carver, Jack and Greenlees all scored over the final seven minutes, but Oregon still held an 8-5 lead at the break.

Denver’s momentum began to build early in the second half with Carver and Jack each scoring twice to pull the Pioneers to within one at 10-9 with 20 minutes left. The Pioneers took control of the game over the next 12 minutes, going on a 7-0 run to open a 16-9 lead.

The Ducks would tally three late goals, but it was not enough as Denver walked away with a 17-12 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Steph Schneider (Leesburg, Va.) recorded 10 saves as the Ducks outshot the Pioneers 31-30 over the span of 60 minutes.

The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 27 when they host No. 3 Northwestern at All-City Stadium at noon.
