Geoff Snider selected fourth by Wings

NEW YORK – Former University of Denver lacrosse star Geoff Snider was selected as the fourth overall pick by the Philadelphia Wings in the National League Lacrosse draft Wednesday evening at the Theater Lobby at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Most recently Snider was named Most Valuable Player at the World Lacrosse Championships tournament as the Canadians defeated the USA, 15-10, in July. Snider, a Calgary, Alberta, native, was selected 17th overall by the Denver Outlaws in the Major League Lacrosse draft in June. Snider recorded two points in five games, including one point in the Outlaws’ playoff game.

While at DU, Snider earned Third-Team USILA All-America and Scholar All-American honors after leading the nation and setting NCAA records in ground balls per game (11.41) and total groundballs (194). He finished second in face-off win percentage (.684) earned his first Scholar All-America honor after earning a 3.58 GPA in finance/marketing.

“I am very excited for Geoff to be selected so high in the draft,” said head coach Jamie Munro. “He’s a great competitor and I am sure he’ll have a tremendous professional career.”

The Wings kick off their 2007 schedule January 6 against Edmonton.

After two seasons as an assistant coach, Jon Torpey has been promoted to associate head coach

DENVER – After two seasons as one of the assistant men’s lacrosse coaches at the University of Denver, Jon Torpey has been promoted to associate head coach, it was announced Thursday by head lacrosse coach Jamie Munro.

“We are excited to promote Jon to associate head coach,” said Munro. “He is one of the main reasons why our program has taken such huge steps in the last two years.”

The Pioneers are 21-10 in the past two seasons, including their first trip to the NCAA tournament last season. In 2006, Denver posted its best record in school history at 12-5, and won their second straight Great Western Lacrosse League title and were ranked as high as No. 12 in the final USILA Geico/STX Coaches Poll. They also set a school record for wins in a season with 12 and earned the first-ever undefeated league schedule with a 5-0 record and the first undefeated home schedule with a 9-0 record. The Pioneers finished the 2005 season with a 9-5 record, a share of the GWLL title and a No. 18 final ranking in the USILA Geico/STX Coaches Poll.

“I am excited to be able to continue working with this team,” said Torpey. “We have had a good couple of years and we hope to continue building on that. The University of Denver has shown tremendous support for lacrosse and for our staff, and that is important to our program’s continued success.”

Before Denver, Torpey was an assistant coach at Denison University where his team made it to the 2001 Division III final four. Torpey also spent three seasons at Goucher College.

Torpey was a four-year starter and three-year captain at Ohio State, where he was a four-time scholar-athlete, a three-time All-Academic Big Ten selection and a finalist for the Big Ten Medal of Honor and the Corwin A. Fergus Award. He earned All-America honors his senior season.

Upon graduation, Torpey was selected by the Columbus Landsharks of the NLL in the fifth round of the 2000 draft. He played with the Philadelphia Wings in the NLL and Philadelphia and Colorado in the Major Lacrosse League.

Torpey earned his bachelor's degree in education from Ohio State in 2000 and received a master's degree in both education and sports administration from Goucher College in 2004. He married the former Tegan Karl in August.
