Regis University Lacrosse Active in Volunteering in the Denver Community
Denver, Colo.: When Sarah Averson was hired this past summer as the head coach of the Regis University lacrosse team she had two immediate goals, turn around the on the field play of the Rangers and have a team that is active in the community. With the start of the 2007 season just around the corner we’ll have to wait and see about the first goal, but it is clear that her second goal has been a success thanks to a team that already shared the same passion to work in the community as Averson.
Since November, the Rangers have been extremely active in volunteering their time in the community. They have worked with the Boys and Girls Club, Colorado Habitat for Humanity and recently with the Colorado Mammoth as well as the the National Sports Center for the Disabled.
On Saturday, January 13 RU teamed up with the Mammoth and National Sports Center for the Disabled to teach the game of lacrosse to over 60 disabled kids. The day, which was at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver, was set up to give the disabled kids an opportunity to participate in an athletic sport in which they would normally not have an opportunity to do so. The work that the RU lacrosse team did with the Mammoth was featured on KUSA-TV Channel 9 news and can be seen on the following link, http://www.9news.com/video/player.aspx?aid=28286&bw.
Through November and December, RU put in time with the Boys and Girls Club as they ran a month long lacrosse clinic. Throughout the month, Averson and her players taught fundamental lacrosse skills, passing, catching and shooting as well as other aspects of the game. Members of the Ranger lacrosse team also spoke to the youth about their experience in lacrosse and what lacrosse means to them.
On December 2, the RU lacrosse team spent the day assisting the Habitat for Humanity. They worked along side families who were working to get their house built in the upcoming months. RU worked hard moving bath tubes, radiators and even the kitchen sink.
The Rangers hope to continue their volunteer efforts with the Colorado Mammoth and the Boys and Girls Club in the near future.
