Two veterans and two new comers shine

DENVER – Four different Pioneers recorded hat tricks as the University of Denver women’s lacrosse team opened its 2006 campaign with an 18-4 victory against Longwood University today at Barton Stadium. Senior Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and freshman Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) both registered four goals, while senior Stephanie Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.) and junior newcomer Kristie Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y) both tallied three.

DU jumped out to a 10-0 lead during the first half and never looked back. The Lancers scored one goal in the closing seconds of the first half to put the score at 10-1.

Denver scored the first three goals of the second stanza to take a 13-1 lead with just under 24 minutes remaining. Ali Shafer notched Longwood’s second goal to make the score 13-2 with 21:06 remaining in the game. The Pioneers would add five more goals to walk away with the season-opening 18-4 win.

Up next, DU returns to Barton Stadium with a 1 p.m. matchup against Duquesne Sunday.
