No. 16 Men’s Lacrosse Team Takes Over Sole Possession Of First Place With A 13-9 Win Over Ohio State
DU picks up its first road win of the season

DENVER- The No. 16 Denver Pioneer men’s lacrosse team picked up its tenth win of the season and took over sole possession of first place in the Great Western Lacrosse League with a 13-9 win over Ohio State this evening in Columbus, Ohio. DU improves to 10-4 (3-0 GWLL), while the Buckeyes fall to 5-5 (2-1 GWLL). The Pioneers were led by Michael Goltra (Washington, N.C.), Adam Goodwin (Columbus, Ohio) and Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) who each tallied two goals each in the win. Goltra also dished out a season-high three assists. Jeb Hollingsworth (Darien, Conn.) was in the cage for DU and tallied seven saves in 60 minutes of action.

“This was a great win for us,” head coach Jamie Munro said. “We knew that we we’re going to have to have a great effort from everyone tonight to beat Ohio State. Everyone played together and we got the job done, I’m very proud of our team.”

The Pioneers broke open the early 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Goodwin and Koll. The Buckeyes would answer with a goal from Jason Bloom to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 7:20 mark of the first period. Goltra added his ninth goal of the season to give DU the 3-1 edge but Ohio State’s Kevin Buchanan put one past Hollingsworth to make the score 3-2 with just under four minutes left to play. The Pioneers scored three unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead with seconds remaining in the first period. Ohio State managed to score one more goal before the end of the period to cut the lead to 6-3 but that was as close as they would get in the period. The second period was all DU as the Pioneers managed to score five straight goals to take an 11-3 advantage into the break.

The Pioneers out shot the Buckeyes 19-10 through the first half and held a 16-12 groundballs advantage.

The second half of action was pretty evenly played with the Pioneers controlling much of the defensive side of the field, holding Ohio State to just 13 shots in the second half. Goodwin and Ruport tallied two more goals for the Pioneers in the third period to bring DU’s lead to 13-4. The Buckeyes managed to sneak in a few more goals on Hollingsworth but couldn’t figure out the Pioneer defense as DU took the 13-7 win.

Denver held a 32-22 shots advantage over the Buckeyes and scooped up 34 groundballs in the victory. The Pioneers also continued their dominance from the face-off circle winning 21-of-25 face-offs in the contest.

DU concludes the weekend Sunday April 23 with a league game against Butler in Indianapolis. Face-off is scheduled for 10 a.m. (MT).
