DENVER-The No. 19 Denver Pioneers extended their record at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium to 6-0 with a 13-5 win over the visiting Bellarmine Knights this evening. The Pioneers improve to 6-4 (0-0 GWLL) on the season while the Knights fall to 3-6. Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta) and Ryan Zordani (Littleton, Colo.) each had one goal. Jeb Hollingsworth (Darien, Conn.) made five saves in 49 minutes of action in the cage.

Bellarmine came out hungry, coming off of back-to-back overtime losses and recorded the games first goal just 40 seconds into the game to take the early 1-0 lead. The Knight lead didn’t last long and at the 9:57 mark of the first period Zordani connected with Goodwin for the Pioneers’ first score of the night to notch the game at 1-1. The teams battled back and forth but DU capitalized on a man-up opportunity with a goal by Barcus to take the 2-1 lead. Goodwin extended the DU lead to two goals with a quick, unassisted score past BU goalie, JC Hutchins. The Pioneer offense was on a roll and recorded two more goals, including another man-up goal with 50 seconds left in the period, to take a 5-2 lead after one period of action. The second period featured high defense intensity and great offensive production by the Pioneers which led to three more scores for DU who took an 8-3 lead into the break.

DU was a perfect 13-of-13 from the face-off circle through the first half of play and collected 27 groundballs. The Pioneers also out shot the Knights 28-7 and were 2-of-3 on their man-up opportunities.

The third period featured more of the Pioneers offense as Barcus and Goodwin each added to the Pioneer tally. Barcus recorded an unassisted goal at the 10:22 mark and Goodwin also tallied an unassisted goal with just over 0.40 seconds left in the period. The Knights also got on the board with just over a minute remaining in the period with a Garett Kikot goal to cut the DU lead to 10-4. The Pioneers offense proved to be too much for the Knights in the fourth period as DU added three more goals to their score, but it was BU that had the last goal. Pat Walsh put one past Austin Konkel (Aurora, Colo.) with 0.01 seconds remaining on the clock as the Pioneers went on to take the 13-5 victory.

DU took 47 shots to the Knights 16 for the game and collected 40 groundballs in the victory. Snider dominated from the face-off circle going 19-of-21 and claiming a perfect 13-of-13 through the first half before losing two face-offs in the third period.

The Pioneers return to action April 9 when they open Great Western Lacrosse League action against GWLL newcomer Quinnipiac. Face-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (MT). DU continues their four-game homestand April 14 when they welcome GWLL rival Notre Dame to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for a pivotal league game.
