Denver Outlaws 20 vs. San Francisco Dragons 25
June 10, 2006
INVESCO Field at Mile High

DENVER – The San Francisco Dragons (2-1) used nine goals and three assists from attackman Ryan Powell to hand the Denver Outlaws (3-1) their first defeat of the season on Saturday in front of 8,951 fans at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Powell’s nine goals tie two other players for the league record for most goals in a single game, while his 12 points tie for the second-most in a single game.

Two weeks ago, the Outlaws spoiled the Dragons’ inaugural game with a 15-11 decision at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The teams will meet again in two weeks when the Dragons return to Denver for the teams’ third contest of the campaign.

The Outlaws scoring was paced by Matt Brown who netted five goals, including a two-pointer and Jeff Sonke who also hit a two-pointer among his three markers.

The Dragons opened a 3-0 lead early in the game, but the Outlaws battled back behind tallies from Brown and Sonke.

Powell found the net five times in the second quarter to lead San Francisco to a 12-6 halftime lead.

The Outlaws opened the second half determined to narrow San Francisco’s lead. The home team scored the first two goals of the third stanza as Brian Langtry and Sonke beat San Francisco netminder Alex Cade in the first minute of the frame.

As was the story through the game, the Dragons found an answer each time the Outlaws crept close. Late in the third quarter, the Outlaws used a five-goal flurry to take a 15-14 lead. Josh Sims used several moves to evade four Dragon defenders to give Denver its first advantage of the game.

Facing their first deficit of the night, San Francisco regained the lead 29 seconds later, as Tom Zummo hit the team’s first two-pointer of the night to take a 16-15 lead. Powell extended the lead to 17-15 with 13 seconds remaining.

The Dragons outscored the Outlaws 8-5 in the fourth quarter to provide the final 25-20 margin.

The Outlaws will travel to New Jersey next week for their first game against the New Jersey Pride.
