Boy’s U-19 Semifinals
Baltimore Crabs 11, Team Ohio 7
In a game plagued by penalties, Baltimore advanced to their third consecutive U-19 championship game with an 11-7 victory over Team Ohio. Ohio stayed within reach for most of the game, but it became clear later on that they simply did not have the midfield offense to penetrate Baltimore’s defense.
Baltimore slowly paced to an 8-4 halftime lead, but the difference in this game was the third quarter. Team Ohio really struggled to clear the ball in the third and Baltimore stayed on the offensive end for long periods at a time. Ohio outscored the Crabs in the third, but they likely could have moved even closer if they had been able to clear better.
Baltimore was paced by attackman Kimmel, who scored six goals on the day. Ohio’s leading point-man Wolford, who ended up with three points. Both teams used two goalies with Baltimore making 8 combined saves and Ohio making 10.
As the game wore on, unsportsmanlike penalties piled up for both teams. Ohio’s coaches were visibly upset at times and cost their teams several penalties and possessions. Combined, there were over 25 penalties called in this game.
Baltimore will move on to the championship game for the third straight year. They lost to New England in 2004 and Colorado last year.
Team Colorado 10, New England 5
Team Colorado used smothering defense and goals from eight different players as they defeated New England in the U-19 semifinals. Colorado moves to their second straight championship game where they take on Baltimore in a rematch of last year’s finals.
Colorado started the game fast, scoring four goals in the first six minutes of action. Colorado face-off man Matt Kelsic did a great job controlling New England’s Charlie Kenney, who had previously been dominant over the past two days of competition.
With good possessions and aggressive defensive checks from Dillon Roy, Team Colorado led 9-1 at one point in the fourth quarter before New England was able creep a little closer. Much like the previous game, this match-up also degenerated a little bit due to some physical play late.
A skirmish broke out in the third quarter, but the referees did well to control the extra-curricular activities. New England scored four of the last five goals, but it obviously wasn’t enough for a victory.
Team Colorado looks for a second straight championship against the Crabs on Friday. They also won the U-19 championship in 2003 over Ohio.
