Day 2 in Vail saw the action heat up as the Masters semifinals were the highlight. Two top teams moved through to the finals, setting up what could be the most anticipated championship games in quite some time. While the lacrosse was good, the weather was nearly better – at least until about 3:30, when the typical Vail thundershower moved through the Valley.

MASTERS DIVISION
As expected, both Rusty Red and Lacrosse Unlimited moved into the finals pretty easily with huge wins over their opponents. The two teams have been the class of the division so far and tomorrow’s finals are eagerly anticipated. Neither team have been tested, but both are solid up and down their lineups. Look for Rusty Red to rely on a stout defense that includes Gerry Byrne (UMass), Dan Pratt (Syracuse) and Dave Stilley (Duke). Their attack is also as good as anyone with Canadian Steve Govett and John Zulberti (Syracuse) helping create chances. Pete White and Kenny Garcia lead the Long Island-based Lacrosse Unlimited. Rusty Red has won the pat three Masters Division titles, but tomorrow’s game could be their toughest test yet.

SUPERMASTERS DIVISION
Aside from the CVLC vs.. Tombstone game, the Supermasters quarterfinals lacked any real drama as Navy, Tri-City and the Elder Statesmen moved through with relative ease. CVLC’s one goal victory was probably the game of the day for any division as they snuck past perennial tournament contestant Tombstone. Tomorrow’s semifinals should have some better match-ups as the cream rises to the crop.

GRANDMASTERS DIVISION
The Grandmasters Division got started on Sunday with two games. While the play was a little rusty at times, there was no question that the teams were there to win. Everyone played hard. Unfortunately, the scoresheets were lost in the shuffle and we’re left to wonder who won the games . . . We will have the updates tomorrow.
