Dr. Tom Watts Memorial Boys U-19 Championship Game
Baltimore Crabs 11, Team Colorado 10

Vail, CO – The third time was indeed the charm for the boys from the “Charm City” as the Baltimore Crabs finally collected their first Vail U-19 Championship with an 11-10 win over Team Colorado on Friday afternoon. Baltimore had reached the finals in both 2004 and 2005, but finally got over the hump thanks to a four point effort from attackmen Collins Carey and five points from Nate Matthews. The game was well-played from start to finish, despite a thirty minute lightening delay late in the third quarter.

Trailing 4-1 after one quarter and 5-2 shortly thereafter, Baltimore got a huge spark from Matthews to close out the half. Thanks to three goals by the rangy attackman, Baltimore closed the gap and tied the score at the end of the half.

The Crabs continued their run in the fourth quarter, finally scoring the last of their six straight goals to push out to an 8-5 lead. Carey had both of his assists in the early stages of the third quarter as Baltimore threatened to put the game away.

But Team Colorado was not about to lie down. A gutsy effort from attackmen Kyle Greenberg (4 goals) and Josh Reichert (3g, 1a) helped the home team claw back to within one as the third quarter was winding down. Unfortunately for everyone, however, a storm was winding up the Vail Valley and halted play late in the quarter with Colorado behind 8-7.

As the field started to become a little sloppy, Baltimore pumped in the first two goals within a minute early in the fourth quarter to make the lead three. Not unlike the Crabs before them, Colorado went on their own run, scoring three goals in just over one and a half minutes to tie the score.

With time running down, Baltimore got a huge goal from Kevin Carroll at the 2:51 mark of the quarter. Carroll scored both of his goals in the fourth quarter and was credited with the game winner as the Crabs converted on an extra man opportunity late. Colorado killed off a three-man down situation at one point in the fourth, but they were unable to tie the score in search of their third Vail title.

Standing out for Team Colorado was University of Denver-bound goalie Peyton Tyrie, who registered 10 saves in the second half. First half goalie Piet Dudley had six saves. Baltimore’s two goalies, Chris Kunhardt and Brian Phipps combined for 12 saves in the victory. Baltimore also got a strong performance from midfielder Dave Marshall, who ended the day with two goals and two assists.
