Colorado Defeats Colorado College in Overtime
COLORADO DEFEATS COLORADO COLLEGE IN OVERTIME
Boulder, CO- February 24, 2007- The University of Colorado Buffaloes kicked off their season today defeating interstate rival DIII Colorado College 12-11 in overtime.
An energized CU squad took a confident 5-2 lead over the Tigers in the first quarter. However the second quarter belonged to the Tigers who scored five unanswered goals. Colorado Sophomore Alex Herr (Thacher School/ Berkeley, CA) scored the only CU goal in the second quarter, leaving the Buffs trailing 6-8 at the half.
The third quarter saw the Buffs battle back and knot the game at 9-9 behind the strength of goals from Senior Jonathan Atwood (Grandview; Parker, CO) and Freshman Blake Witcomb (La Costa Canyon/ Carlsbad, CA).
CC opened the 4th Quarter with two unanswered goals before Colorado’s Whitcomb answered with his third goal of the day and Junior Tyler Baruch added another score to tie the game 11-11 and send the game into overtime.
In overtime the Buffs capitalized on a man-up opportunity when Junior Jack Kruzewski (New Trier/ Chicago, IL) put a shot behind the CC goalie to take the lead and seal the victory for the Buffs.
After the game Colorado Head Coach John Galvin noted the importance of the early season victory “Today was a good start to the season; it’s a great confidence boost going into the Big XII Tournament next weekend.”
#2 Colorado will start their MCLA Regular Season Schedule next weekend in Plano, TX in the Big XII Tournament where they will face off against #22 Texas, Texas A&M and The University of Missouri.
