Pioneers Open Season against Penn State
No. 14 Pioneers take on Nittany Lions in men’s lacrosse
DENVER – The No. 14-ranked University of Denver men’s lacrosse team opens its 2007 season against Penn State in College Station, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. MT/7 p.m. ET.
Senior captains Ryan Zordani (Littleton, Colo.) and David Hahn (Aurora, Colo.) and junior Rory Shepard (Riverside, Conn.) were selected to Inside Lacrosse magazine's Face-Off Yearbook's list of preseason honorable mention All-American. DU was also selected to win the Great West Lacrosse League after finishing 2006 with an overall record of 12-5, the best season in school history, and the Pioneers’ first NCAA tournament.
Denver returns 27 players from a year ago and has added 11 freshmen to the fold. Zordani, Hahn, Shepard and junior Michael Goltra (Washington, N.C.) were selected to the All-GWLL preseason team.
DU is 10-12 on opening day since becoming a varsity sport in 1984. The Pioneers are 5-3 in openers under head coach Jamie Munro, who begins his ninth year at the helm, sporting a 64-58 career record. Denver and the Nittany Lions are 1-1 in the all-time series. PSU won the last meeting, 11-10.
Denver opens its season in the Mile High City on Saturday, March 3 against Villanova at 1:30 p.m. in the Face-Off Classic.
