DU Men’s Lacrosse Team Draws No. 2 Seed Maryland In First Round of NCAA Tournament
The Pioneers will play the Terrapins May 13 in Maryland

DENVER- The 12th-ranked University of Denver men’s lacrosse team will travel to College Park, MD to face the No.2-seeded Maryland Terrapins in the first round of the 2006 Men’s Lacrosse NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers and Terrapins will square off at noon (M.T.) Saturday May 13 in Maryland’s Byrd Stadium.

“We are very excited to be heading to our first NCAA Tournament,” head coach Jamie Munro said. “We’ve been anxious to find out who we are going to play and now that we know we can really begin preparing. Maryland is a great team and we’re ready to step up to the challenge.”

“This is a great experience for our team,” senior captain Andrew McCuiston said. “We are excited to be in the tournament for the first time. We have worked hard all season long, we’re happy to be here but we really want to win.”

The Pioneers earned one of the six automatic bids by winning the Great Western Lacrosse League. The Pioneers concluded the 2006 season with a record of 12-4 (5-0 GWLL). Maryland was awarded one of 10 at-large bids after falling to No.1-seed Virginia in the final of the ACC Tournament. The Pioneers are the only team in the field of 16 that is making its NCAA Tournament debut.

This will be the third time that the Pioneers and Terrapins have met with Maryland taking the two previous meetings. Maryland took a 13-5 win in 1999 in College Park and defeated the Pioneers 10-7 in the 2001 Pioneer Face-Off Classic in Denver.

The winner of the Denver/Maryland game will meet the winner of the Princeton/UMBC first round game in the quarterfinals on Sunday, May 21, at Towson's Unitas Stadium.

Ticket information will be available Monday morning and can be found at www.DenverPioneers.com or by calling the Ritchie Center box office at (303) 871-2336.
